The PhD program in Slavic Languages and Literatures prepares students for academic careers as scholars and educators in this field. Candidates focus on either literature or linguistics, blending foundational coursework with early opportunities for independent research. Admission is exclusively for PhD or combined MA/PhD candidates; standalone MA applications are not accepted. The literature and culture track offers comprehensive training in canonical works and their historical backgrounds while fostering specialization in literary and cultural theories. While most Berkeley students select Russian as their primary language, the department welcomes those interested in studying the rich literary traditions of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. A limited number of students may specialize in Polish, Bulgarian, or BCS (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian) language and literature, following customized study plans with significant independent work. These students typically pursue Russian as their secondary field. Although Berkeley doesn't offer a Czech PhD program, students may select Czech as their secondary Slavic language.
