Innovative perspectives on the literature and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Brazil, Lusophone Africa, and U.S. Latina/o communities. Stanford University's Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures has consistently led the way in developing fresh methodologies for studying these diverse cultural traditions. Featuring distinguished scholars specializing in various fields and historical periods, the Department delivers cutting-edge academic programs that empower students to surpass their intellectual and professional aspirations. Our educational mission focuses on three key objectives: 1) delivering comprehensive understanding of Iberian literatures and cultures from medieval times to modernity, alongside the cultural productions of Spanish-speaking Latin America, global Portuguese-speaking communities, and U.S. Hispanic populations, 2) equipping undergraduates for graduate studies or diverse professional pathways, and 3) offering doctoral candidates exceptional training as academic researchers and educators, preparing them for university faculty positions or similar careers. Across all programs, our faculty provides extraordinary mentorship and guidance to students.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
