The English Department provides an accelerated five-year combined degree program, allowing students to earn both a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) through full-time study.
At St. John's, all graduate English courses are seminar-style, led by dedicated research faculty who mentor both graduate and undergraduate students. The M.A. curriculum enables students to tailor their studies to align with academic interests and career aspirations. With just one mandatory core course (Modern Critical Theories), the program allows for either a broad exploration of advanced English studies or focused specialization in particular disciplines. Key study areas include British and American literature, creative writing, composition studies, and interdisciplinary fields like gender studies and postcolonial studies. The department boasts particular strength in American studies, modernist studies, and writing/composition studies, along with distinguished faculty in British literary studies.
