The English program offers a foundational curriculum that equips students with critical thinking skills (encompassing literary theories and terminology) for both writing practice and academic study, along with an understanding of historical and artistic contexts and an awareness of global cultural diversity. This foundation benefits all English majors, regardless of whether they focus on literature, rhetoric and nonfiction writing, or creative writing at the CSU level. The program acknowledges how these disciplines interconnect and influence each other. Core courses emphasize advanced writing abilities and are essential for building the expertise required for careers in K-12 or community college education, graduate-level literary research, legal professions, creative writing, or nonfiction contributions to literary, business, and scientific publications.
