Students enrolled in the mechatronics and robotics engineering program, provided by the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, develop intelligent devices by integrating principles from mechanical and electrical engineering. Graduates of the School of Engineering are influencing the future through the design of advanced vehicles, autonomous agricultural machinery, industrial robots, and numerous other innovations. These devices incorporate mechanical and electrical parts, sensors, and computer software—all functioning in unison. With the growing prevalence of automation and robotics, the demand for engineers skilled in these areas is also rising. Mechatronics and robotics engineering arose from the necessity to achieve optimal designs by seamlessly blending mechanical and electronics expertise. Engineers in this field possess the interdisciplinary skills required to manage the entire design and development process of such intelligent devices, rather than handling mechanical, electrical, and control aspects independently. The Bachelor of Science in mechatronics and robotics engineering at SIUE is among the limited number of such programs available in the U.S. and internationally.
Mechatronics and robotics engineers secure employment with firms that design, develop, and produce intelligent devices, systems, and equipment for sectors including medical, automotive, communication, agriculture, construction, and entertainment. Examples include mobile or industrial robots, quadcopters and drones, self-driving vehicles, sophisticated prosthetic limbs, consumer electronics, space and defense technologies, and smart home, city, and planet initiatives. Graduates of the mechatronics and robotics engineering program may also advance to graduate studies in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering.
Students seeking a bachelor’s degree from SIUE who have never attended a college or university, and those who may have taken some coursework at a college or university outside the U.S. but do not currently hold a bachelor’s degree.
