The Applied Psychology concentration blends industrial/organizational psychology with applied social psychology, preparing students for diverse careers in business, government, nonprofits, consulting, and academia. The curriculum covers statistical analysis, applied social science research methods, program evaluation, organizational consulting, and traditional academic research. A standout feature is our student-run consulting firm, Applied Research Consultants (ARC), which offers real-world training in psychological applications.
Applied Research Consultants (ARC): This distinctive SIU program provides hands-on experience in psychological consulting. Students develop practical skills in needs assessment, survey creation, data interpretation, and report preparation through ARC's student-operated projects. Learn more on the ARC website.
Specializations: Students craft personalized specialization plans aligned with their career aspirations and dissertation topics. These custom tracks are built through coursework, directed readings, and independent study under faculty guidance.
Financial Support: Generous funding packages are guaranteed for first-year students and typically continue throughout enrollment. Qualified students receive stipends, tuition waivers, and gain professional experience through teaching, research assistantships, or externships.
