The Doctor of Philosophy in English equips graduate students with scholarly expertise and teaching skills across diverse literary fields, theoretical approaches, cultural analysis, and rhetoric/composition studies. This five-year PhD curriculum is structured for full-time enrollment. Students fulfill residency requirements by completing 24 graduate credit hours prior to qualifying exams, plus an additional 24 dissertation credit hours. Language proficiency in at least one foreign language must be verified through coursework or testing. Doctoral candidates work closely with faculty advisors to tailor their academic path, submitting a detailed Program of Study by their fourth semester that specifies their research focus and methodology, approved by their advisory committee.
