The Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures enhances language skills while promoting analytical thinking through the study of literature, film, and linguistics, thereby cultivating insightful viewpoints on diverse cultures and societies, including our own. Faculty and student achievements in research, education, and community involvement create a strong platform for rewarding careers as knowledgeable, active global citizens. The PhD program in modern foreign languages demands specialized study in a primary language (French, German, or Spanish) along with either a secondary language, applied linguistics, or Latin American Studies. Additional coursework in related disciplines is also available.

Qualification Requirements

Generally, applicants will have completed an MA in French, German, or Spanish to be accepted into this program, but consideration will also be given to those with significant graduate training in any of these areas. Both graduates of institutions in the United States and those with graduate degrees from institutions outside the United States must have a grade point average of at least 3.00.
Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
a total score of 550 or equivalent on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), or
a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
