Diagnostic Medical Sonography, also known as ultrasound imaging or sonography, is a medical diagnostic technique that employs high-frequency sound waves to generate real-time visuals of internal organs, tissues, and blood circulation. Commonly called an ultrasound or sonogram, this method provides a safe imaging alternative without radiation exposure, unlike X-rays.
SIU's Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program holds accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), endorsed by the Joint Review Committee for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Graduates from this accredited program fulfill all prerequisites to take national certification exams for abdominal and obstetrics & gynecology specialties.
