The Creative Writing Certificate program offers two distinct focus areas.
The General Writing track strengthens students' creative writing skills while providing knowledge on marketing and publishing their work.
The Professional Writing concentration emphasizes practical applications, covering fields like screenwriting, technical writing, journalism, and non-fiction.
To complete the Creative Writing Certificate, students must earn 18 units total. This includes both required core courses (6 units) plus four courses from their chosen specialization - either Creative Writing or Professional Writing (12 units). Students may substitute two courses from the elective options listed below. Each specialization includes suggested electives. In their final semester, certificate recipients must deliver a public reading lasting at least twenty minutes, coordinated with a creative writing faculty member from the English Department.
