Seattle University's Creative Writing program operates on the principle that skilled readers become skilled writers. Instead of providing an isolated writing degree, the English Department combines literature studies with a Creative Writing specialization, maintaining that analytical reading abilities are fundamental to a writer's growth. The program focuses on writing techniques and in-depth analysis of both classic and modern texts, incorporating essential English courses covering British, American, and ethnic literature alongside genre-specific writing classes in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and dramatic writing. Consequently, Creative Writing students gain not just creative writing practice but also refine their ability to analyze significant literary works encountered during their English studies.
In addition to collaborating with English and Creative Writing faculty, students can learn from visiting instructors drawn from the Pacific Northwest's thriving arts scene. Past guest writers have included novelist Kathleen Alcal, Washington's Poet Laureate Sam Green, graphic novelist Peter Bagge, mystery author Skye Moody, sci-fi writer Steven Barnes, and screenwriter Stewart Stern.
