Interior Design majors in the Department of Design leverage diverse university and Bay Area resources to equip themselves for careers across private and public sectors, including corporate spaces, hospitality venues, institutional facilities, offices, and retail environments. The curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning in interior architecture, focusing on analytical reasoning, effective communication, design methodology, emerging technologies, ergonomics, aesthetic principles, legal standards, and professional ethics. Entry into the BFA Interior Design program requires a portfolio evaluation following foundational coursework. Subsequent portfolio reviews at each semester's end are mandatory for program progression. A 1-unit professional internship is compulsory for all Interior Design students to fulfill degree requirements.
Continuation in the BFA program depends on successfully passing a milestone portfolio assessment. Those who don't meet the standard will be transitioned to the Design Studies BA track.
Students must Earn a high school diploma, or equivalent and earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.
Students admitted to the BA in Design Studies may be admitted to the BFA in Graphic or Interior Design or the BS in Industrial Design on a space available basis after successfully completing required portfolio reviews in their first two years of study.
