The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences teaches students about societal dynamics that shape, preserve, and change our communities. This program builds on sociological principles and interdisciplinary methods to examine society, including teacher education preparation. Sociologists study how institutions like the economy, government, schools, families, media, and legal systems influence people's lives. Students gain analytical skills and cultural understanding to address social, political, economic, historical, and global challenges while developing leadership abilities. The teacher training component prepares educators for diverse classrooms with varied racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Our department features two primary degree paths: General Sociology and Specialized Sociology (with focuses on Community Development, Race/Ethnic Studies, Social Dynamics, or Gender/Sexuality Studies), plus Social Science Teacher Certification (Multiple and Single Subject). We also provide minor programs in: Asian American Studies, General Sociology, Educational Sociology, and Gender/Sexuality Studies. Graduates pursue careers in education, public service, law enforcement, nonprofits, market analysis, personnel management, social services, and related fields.
