The History Bachelor of Arts program from the Department of History caters to students seeking a well-rounded liberal arts education, those building a foundation for social sciences, aspiring history graduate students, and individuals pursuing teaching credentials.
History equips students with analytical skills to comprehend and interpret the world across different time periods. The SJSU History Department provides both undergraduate and graduate programs that train students in critical reading, source evaluation, informed decision-making, and compelling evidence-based communication. While many alumni enter teaching professions, others pursue diverse careers in law, media, cultural institutions, public service, and various business sectors. The department facilitates internship opportunities and hosts Phi Alpha Theta, the History honor society, which organizes scholarly and networking events. The Social Science Teacher Preparation (SSTP) track specifically supports future educators. Graduate studies focus on U.S., European, and World history specializations, with many MA graduates teaching at secondary schools and community colleges.
