Gain preparation for diverse career paths in education, technical writing, or graduate studies in English, legal, and medical fields. The Department of English and Comparative Literature provides programs covering English, American, global, and comparative literature, plus creative and professional writing. Our MA program readies graduates for teaching positions or PhD pursuits. The MFA in creative writing develops skilled authors through intensive study of poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and screenwriting traditions. Hosting both the Steinbeck Fellows and Lurie Visiting Distinguished Author initiatives, the department also maintains the Center for Literary Arts, welcoming renowned poets and prose writers for public campus events.
Undergraduate Creative Writing students engage directly in literary creation. Following the foundational Transatlantic survey sequence shared by all English majors, concentrators advance to specialized workshops across multiple genres - including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and scriptwriting.
Students must Earn a high school diploma, or equivalent and earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.
English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL – 61 (IBT), Paper based – 500; Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 44.
