The Industrial Design Program has two primary objectives: first, to help students grasp humanity's changing needs, and second, to empower them to create tangible solutions for those needs. Upon graduation, students will be equipped to develop sustainable answers to global challenges. They'll gain expertise in designing from multiple viewpoints while considering the richness of human diversity. Students can bring their ideas to life in our state-of-the-art Seid Lab, generously funded by an alumnus, which offers exclusive access to advanced fabrication tools for Industrial Design majors.
Our renowned faculty understands that impactful industrial designers must deeply understand all aspects of human experience. Therefore, the program actively collaborates with SJSU's Anthropology, Business, and Engineering departments. Our prime Silicon Valley location also allows us to regularly host guest speakers from leading tech firms and design studios, who provide valuable insights and critique student projects.
Industrial design extends beyond creating functional objects—it encompasses designing experiences and services. In our ever-changing world, we aim to provide aspiring designers with a crucial blend of theory, skills, and practical knowledge to become globally-minded change-makers.
Students can enroll in the Industrial Design major without a portfolio submission. However, the BSID program follows a rigorous structure, mandating successful completion of four annual portfolio courses (DSID 32A, DSID 123A, DSID 125A, DSID 128A) to advance through studio coursework. Adhering to the recommended curriculum schedule is essential for timely degree completion. (Comprehensive guidelines are available through the Design Department Office).
