The Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies (AIS) encourages students to critically examine the connections and contrasts between historical and contemporary Native American experiences and their own lives. The program's dual-focused curriculum bridges tribal community priorities with academic excellence, allowing faculty to leverage their knowledge and teaching enthusiasm to enhance students' cultural awareness and equip them for demanding professional environments. The Department of American Indian Studies holds a unique commitment to Indigenous communities in California and nationwide. Situated on California land within the U.S. public education system, the university and department prioritize studies of California Natives, U.S.-Native relations, and North American Indigenous cultures, equipping graduates to collaborate effectively with tribal and urban Native communities across California and the U.S. The curriculum additionally incorporates global viewpoints and solidarity-building with Indigenous populations in U.S. territories, throughout the Americas, and across the Pacific. Combining theoretical instruction with hands-on community engagement, the program optimally prepares students for advanced academic pursuits or diverse career paths serving Indigenous populations both within California and around the world.
