The composition program is tailored for students with diverse musical backgrounds who aspire to create original music. We acknowledge that modern composers often draw inspiration from an array of genres—from K-pop and hip-hop to EDM and rock, from video game soundtracks to Mariachi traditions.
We celebrate this diversity and engage with the cultural discussions these genres inspire, positioning ourselves as active participants in these creative exchanges.
Students in composition craft pieces for various formats, including orchestral arrangements, film soundtracks, electronic music, and songwriting. Our curriculum equips them with practical skills to pursue opportunities like producing original compositions, studio recording, software development, publishing, and designing album visuals.

Qualification Requirements
Completion of high school/secondary level. A certified copy of graduation certificate or diploma will be required prior to enrollment at SDSU. A minimum U.S. equivalent GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 (B grade or 80 percent) or higher. TOEFL Passing score is 80 iBT and 550 paper or higher. IELTS Passing overall score is 6.5 or higher.
