The MFA in ceramics cultivates your creative and conceptual abilities through a comprehensive program. You'll critically analyze both historical and modern ceramic artists while broadening your technical expertise in the field. Thoughtful critiques foster profound insights into your work and that of your colleagues, strengthening your artistic vision and unique style. Completing this ceramics degree will enrich your grasp of aesthetic principles, forming methods, and fine art concepts while advancing your professional trajectory in ceramics.
Ceramics represents an artistic practice where items ranging from pottery and vases to sculptures and tiles are fashioned from clay, silica, feldspar, and other components. After shaping, these pieces undergo firing in high-temperature kilns. Many ceramic works then receive decorative finishes through paints, glazes, and other surface treatments.
RIT's ceramics MFA emphasizes artistic growth via rigorous instruction in ceramic aesthetics and design methods. Through graduate studio work, seminars, and detailed critiques—combined with thesis development—students gain substantial insight into their own creations as well as their peers' work. Coursework involves exploring contemporary artists' creative approaches, visual language, and critical reception. Regular thesis evaluations monitor progress toward the final exhibition, culminating in a formal assessment by the thesis review panel.
