This department provides students with rigorous preparation for professional paths across three key domains: theatrical roles such as dramaturgs, artistic producers, and literary managers; theater publishing careers including critics, editors, and related positions; and academic theater instruction as practitioners, critics, and scholars. The curriculum centers on seminars covering literature, theory, criticism, and history to deliver thorough understanding of theater and dramatic works. Training encompasses institutional dramaturgy topics like developing artistic policies and their execution, along with production dramaturgy skills for working within rehearsal processes. After earning their M.F.A., graduates may extend their residency for one year to develop dissertation proposals and apply to the Doctor of Fine Arts program. Accepted candidates typically complete their dissertations within a three-year timeframe.
