Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a versatile discipline providing students with multiple academic pathways. At the undergraduate level, learners can choose between the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or the Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSCE, with its technical focus, offers four specialization tracks, while the BA provides greater flexibility through two major concentrations, enabling students to potentially combine it with another Rice University major. For aspiring civil and environmental engineers, a Master of Science has become the standard entry-level qualification and a prerequisite for Professional Engineer certification. This graduate program is ideal for students seeking to deepen their expertise in a specialized area through innovative research, as well as those considering doctoral studies. Graduates of the MS in Civil Engineering will achieve the following competencies: Establish a robust graduate-level understanding of civil and environmental engineering principles. Master and implement advanced engineering concepts to solve complex technical challenges. Design and execute independent research projects. Develop professional communication abilities in both written and verbal formats. The oral examination occurs only when the thesis committee approves the written document for public defense. Typically, students complete this degree program within two academic years plus the summer between them.
