The Master of Music program spans two years, focusing on rigorous collaboration with renowned faculty through private lessons, coaching sessions, research projects, and diverse performance experiences in orchestral, chamber, and solo contexts. Students benefit from the exceptional academic resources at The Shepherd School of Music and across Rice University, which complement their practical training. Performance majors must complete four credits in Music Career and Skills Enhancement coursework. Our mission is to cultivate well-rounded musicians whose artistic vision, innovative spirit, and intellectual depth will shape the future of classical music.
Graduates of the MMus program will achieve the following competencies: Exhibit professional mastery in performance, composition, or musicology. Acquire sophisticated music theory analysis capabilities and apply them to musical interpretation. Understand the profound connections between music history and performance practice. Gain essential career-building skills to support their professional artistic endeavors.
