Rice University's Art History PhD program prepares students for academic careers, museum roles, and other visual arts professions. The curriculum involves two years of classes, proficiency in two foreign languages beyond English, plus completion of a research paper, qualifying exams (both oral and written), a dissertation proposal, and a final doctoral thesis. Students can choose between two tracks. Full-time scholars may engage in teaching and museum internships, while the part-time Museum Professionals track caters to current museum employees. Though exempt from teaching requirements and granted extended timelines, part-time candidates must fulfill identical academic standards as their full-time counterparts.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL test and should score at least 90 on the iBT (internet-based) TOEFL, at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or score 250 on the computer-based TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7. Candidates who hold a Bachelor's degree, or who will complete a Bachelor's degree by the start of the admission term, are eligible to apply. Many, but not all, of our applicants also have a Master's degree in Art History or a related field. Please note that program requirements are identical for those entering with Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

Applicants with previous degrees in majors other than Art History are eligible to apply, although a substantial background in art history/visual studies is recommended.

In general, applicants should have a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in their undergraduate work.

Application
Applicants will be asked to submit a plan of study, three (3) letters of recommendation, a writing sample (no more than 25 pages), and transcripts from each college attended. The GRE is not required.
