The department welcomes applicants to the PhD program who have a clear research focus in sociocultural anthropology. While an undergraduate degree in anthropology is preferred, it's not mandatory. New students will work with a faculty advisory committee to create a comprehensive first-year study plan, including preliminary outlines for subsequent years. This plan will prioritize foundational disciplinary training before narrowing down to dissertation research topics. After earning their MA and PhD in Anthropology, graduates will: Acquire the necessary skills for diverse professional paths, both academic and non-academic. Gain thorough knowledge of anthropology's historical development, theoretical frameworks, and practical applications. Master essential methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, and critical analysis techniques to both contribute to and critically evaluate anthropological scholarship. Develop the ability to apply research and analytical skills to original inquiries, generating novel perspectives in anthropological studies and making meaningful contributions to ongoing disciplinary conversations.
