The General Option PhD in Anthropology mandates 60 credits post-bachelor's degree, fulfillment of coursework for any UM Anthropology MA Option or an equivalent 30+ credit master's from another institution, completion of specialized curriculum requirements, a comprehensive exam including defense of the research proposal, an anthropology-focused dissertation, and its final defense.
Our program's core philosophy emphasizes applying anthropological theory to address pressing modern challenges through targeted community research. While many University of Montana Anthropology PhD graduates pursue academic careers, we equally prioritize training applied anthropologists for roles in government bodies, NGOs, tribal organizations, ethnic associations, and corporate sectors.
