Students who have earned their M.A. degree in the department and intend to continue with a Ph.D. must apply for the doctoral program in the semester immediately after receiving their master's degree. (Those taking a break after their M.A. should submit their Ph.D. application as soon as they resume studies at the University.) Applicants must submit a Request for Ph.D. Program Admission form to the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC) for review. Individuals who joined the department with a master's from another institution should discuss their program standing with the Graduate Advisor upon arrival. Direct-entry Ph.D. candidates must establish an examination committee within their first academic year and follow the same application process as master's students transitioning to the doctoral program. The Ph.D. requires completion of 18 credit hours, with a minimum of 9 credits in Anthropology core courses. Credits from UT's Anthropology M.A. program apply toward the doctoral requirements.
The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Anthropology provides an extensive program combining research, education, and public outreach, leveraging its established expertise in archaeology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology to navigate the complexities of our diverse, interconnected, and rapidly evolving world.
Our sociocultural program supports exploration across multiple theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, and subject areas, with faculty conducting innovative research and teaching on topics spanning performance politics, state development, multispecies studies, borderland dynamics between the U.S. and Mexico, and feminist anthropology approaches to affect theory.
