To maintain leadership in contemporary Chemistry and Chemical Biology, the department focuses on thorough training in core principles of chemical synthesis, analysis, and application through cutting-edge techniques and instrumentation. This approach enables exploration of boundaries and connections across conventional academic disciplines. The department's commitment is evident through its numerous interdisciplinary research centers, each fostering strong collaborations between Chemistry and other fields, departments, and institutions. Ph.D. candidates must fulfill both university and departmental criteria, which include passing an oral qualifying exam, successfully defending their dissertation, and completing 72 credit hours post-bachelor's degree (with at least 48 credits earned at Rensselaer) through combined research and coursework. Required courses for each Ph.D. program are tailored to individual academic backgrounds and research objectives.
