To earn a doctoral degree, students must complete 72 credits if starting with a bachelor's degree or 48 credits with a master's degree. Beyond residency and dissertation requirements, candidates must finish 36 course credits (bachelor's entry) or 12 course credits (master's entry). Each Ph.D. student receives guidance from an adviser who oversees their academic and research journey. While typically from the MANE department, advisers may sometimes come from other departments.
RPI's aerospace faculty and graduate researchers lead pioneering work in experimental/computational fluid dynamics, morphing structures, advanced simulations, structural monitoring, dynamics, nanomaterials, and propulsion systems. Their innovations impact aircraft, spacecraft, wind energy, underwater vehicles, and infrastructure. Many aerospace graduate students have earned prestigious fellowships from NSF, NASA, and DoD. Students can join professional organizations like AIAA and AHS, participating in design competitions organized by these groups and agencies like NASA.
