Welcome to the Department of European Languages and Literatures, where we provide education in the languages, literary traditions, and cultural studies of French, German, Greek, Italian, and Russian-speaking regions. Alongside foundational language courses that develop essential communication skills, we offer diverse advanced electives covering specialized topics like translation, literature, cinema, and cultural studies. The department has also introduced four innovative courses focusing on interdisciplinary European cultural studies.
Queens College's mission is to equip students with the skills to become global leaders. This requires cultivating analytical abilities to navigate an interconnected world where cross-cultural communication is essential. The college fulfills this mission through demanding academic programs led by distinguished scholar-educators. Our alumni develop critical thinking skills while engaging with the rich cultural diversity of Queens and the wider world. Faculty in European Languages and Literatures contribute significantly to these objectives by teaching students to appreciate European cultural heritage - knowledge that proves invaluable in our multicultural society. The languages we teach represent living connections to immigrant communities in Queens, preserving ancestral tongues while welcoming new speakers through ongoing immigration.
