Students accepted into the Master's program can select between the thesis track or non-thesis track.
Thesis Track. This path is strongly advised as it involves undertaking original research and producing a publishable thesis. Excelling in the thesis-based Master's gives students a competitive edge for Ph.D. applications or job opportunities. Ph.D. admission necessitates demonstrating independent research capabilities.
The thesis track mandates at least 21 graduate semester hours of technical/quantitative coursework plus a thesis. ME 698 thesis research credits complete the 30-hour requirement. Independent projects don't count toward the 21 coursework hours. Research is always guided by the Advisory Committee Chair (Major Professor) or Co-Chairs. Distance learners may pursue this option only in exceptional circumstances.
All Master's degree plans must include six (6) hours of applied mathematics coursework, with at least three (3) hours from the Mathematics Department.
