The Department of Nutrition Science serves as the foundation for cultivating the next generation of nutrition experts equipped to thrive in a globalized society.
Through decades of research, we've established that dietary choices significantly influence the health outcomes of both people and animals. Our nutritional health studies synthesize knowledge from multiple fields: biochemistry, physiology, psychology, food science, genetics, and cellular biology form the core of our nutritional understanding and practical applications.
The Interdepartmental Nutrition Program (INP) offers cross-disciplinary education for aspiring nutrition researchers. With faculty from various departments contributing diverse specializations, students gain access to comprehensive learning experiences. Prospective INP participants apply through Purdue West Lafayette's Nutrition graduate program, where accepted candidates pursue either an MS or PhD under faculty guidance. The program equips students with multiple methodologies to tackle critical nutritional challenges. Applicants specify their academic focus by choosing among these specialized tracks:
Molecular and Biochemical Nutrition
Clinical and Human Nutrition Studies
Animal Development and Wellness
Community Nutrition and Public Health
Participants in these research groups investigate nutrient metabolism pathways, diet-related disease mechanisms, and phytochemical interactions. Their work employs cellular models, animal studies, and fundamental biological sciences, laying the groundwork for practical interventions that enhance dietary guidelines and therapeutic nutrition approaches.
