This two-year program focuses equally on academic coursework and thesis research within ESE's interdisciplinary structure. Graduate assistantships are scarce and extremely competitive in this track. Participants must fulfill 24 credits of coursework while also completing professional development components. Those enrolled are required to conduct environmental research and present their thesis defense before completing their second year.

Applicants are ordinarily expected to hold a bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing prior to registration, and should have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or higher.
