UVA's Urban and Environmental Planning graduate program focuses on promoting sustainability via teamwork in planning and active community involvement. Our sustainability approach stems from the belief that human communities and quality of life are fundamentally connected to ecosystems and planetary environmental wellbeing. Yet we equally prioritize fairness and justice within our sustainability framework, acknowledging planning's crucial role in creating equitable urban spaces and natural surroundings. As a professional qualification, the MUEP equips students with theoretical knowledge, analytical capabilities, technical expertise, and practical experience to become principled, competent leaders. Our diverse student body represents various academic fields such as social sciences, engineering, design, and humanities. Planning offers extensive professional possibilities to transform your passions into rewarding careers. To guide your academic path, specialization choices, and professional future, we provide personalized faculty mentoring alongside standard academic advising. This program holds accreditation from the Planning Accreditation Board, supported by both the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. MUEP graduates qualify for AICP certification after completing two years of professional planning work.
The Master of Urban and Environmental Planning requires two years of study and completion of at least 51 credits.
