The PhD program emphasizes research, aiming to cultivate independent scholars who can advance and effectively share knowledge. Core doctoral disciplines encompass: athletic training, biomechanics, motor control and development, exercise physiology, and exercise psychology.
Similar to the MS program, the PhD offers adaptability, with each student's curriculum developed alongside their advisory committee. Applicants typically align closely with a faculty member's research focus and aspire to academic or research-oriented careers. The program mandates at least 34 credit hours post-master's or 52 credit hours post-bachelor's. Course selection is tailored through student-committee collaboration and approved after a concise presentation to graduate faculty. Additional requirements involve attending the HK Doctoral Seminar series during the first year, passing written and oral preliminary exams after core coursework, submitting either a research paper for publication or a grant proposal, and completing and defending a dissertation.
