For those passionate about assisting others in enhancing their life situations, the Human Services major could be an ideal fit. This program attracts students who care deeply about supporting individuals and families through difficult times by helping them navigate challenges.
The Human Services curriculum prepares graduates for diverse roles in community initiatives, in-home services, healthcare-related social work, and mental health institutions. This program equips students with foundational understanding of human development and family dynamics, practical skills for agency work, and techniques for assessing program effectiveness. As they progress, students gain expertise in assisting children, adults, and family units.
A key component of this major is a final internship with a human services organization, typically undertaken during the last or penultimate semester, with flexibility for fall, spring, or summer terms.
An additional focus area in addiction studies is available within this major. Completing this specialization results in both a Purdue University bachelor's degree and an Ivy Tech Community College addiction studies certification. Graduates with this concentration meet all qualifications for Indiana's bachelor-level, pre-supervision licensure in addiction counseling (LACA).
