Geotechnical engineering focuses on examining, planning, and building foundations, slopes, retaining walls, and other structures composed of or resting on soil or rock. Research in this field spans from analytical and computational studies of geotechnical issues to developing material models, conducting experiments, and pursuing design-focused investigations. The Geotechnical Faculty has consistently balanced theoretical, experimental, and design-driven research, a practice that continues to this day.

Within Civil Engineering, the Geotechnical Engineering specialization is quite flexible, allowing students and their advisory committees to tailor a curriculum that aligns with personal objectives. A wide variety of courses are offered in geotechnical engineering and other civil engineering subfields. Students also have the option to enroll in classes from geology, mathematics, chemistry, agronomy, and additional engineering areas. The Geotechnical Facilities enable both undergraduate and graduate students to investigate the principles and accuracy of strength and compressibility theories, applying them to stability and settlement assessments. The Purdue Geotechnical Society strengthens the close-knit, collaborative ties among alumni, faculty, students, and staff in the Geotechnical Engineering program at Purdue University, benefiting everyone involved.
