Industrial design is a strategic approach to solving challenges across products, systems, services, and experiences, driving innovation, business growth, and improved living standards. Throughout their education, students develop expertise in form creation, sketching, idea generation, prototyping, model-making, and research methodologies.
Purdue's Industrial Design program boasts strong professional outcomes, with more than 90% of alumni working as industrial designers. Our graduates have secured positions at leading corporations including Nike, Microsoft, Whirlpool, and Mercedes Benz, as well as top design firms like IDEO, SMART Design, and ZIBA.
The four-year undergraduate curriculum emphasizes form development for mass-produced items, equipping graduates with innovative problem-solving abilities and the skills to create manufacturable, visually appealing designs. The first year establishes foundational design capabilities through abstract problem-solving exercises that cultivate both manual and digital form development skills. Second-year coursework shifts focus to product shaping across various production methods, combining hands-on workshop experience with digital tools and rapid prototyping. Third-year students engage with corporate-sponsored initiatives and design contests, addressing both technical specifications and user experience considerations. The final year integrates sponsored projects, leadership training, and individual thesis work, with students incorporating advanced research methods into their design solutions.
