The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering aims to cultivate engineering and applied science leaders through an intensive graduate curriculum that pushes the boundaries of knowledge in our discipline and equips students for academic, industrial, and governmental careers. Our curriculum focuses on developing comprehensive foundational knowledge across diverse subjects, specialized expertise in chosen fields, and exceptional communication abilities. Modern engineering challenges often demand interdisciplinary solutions, and our department has a proven track record of pioneering research that bridges engineering with physics, chemistry, biological sciences, and applied mathematics. The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program is ideal for individuals seeking deeper subject mastery or wishing to expand their expertise beyond their primary technical specialties. This coursework-focused degree requires no thesis or research component, allowing most students to complete program requirements within a single 10-month academic year.

Qualification Requirements

All official Transcripts. A bachelor's degree or its foreign equivalent from an accredited college or university. Official transcripts of your grades.
Three letters of recommendation. Applicants are required to upload a transcript (may be unofficial at this time) including the key from all attended colleges or universities.
The transcript must show the name of the student, name of the issuing institution, name of courses taken, and the grades received in those courses.
The Graduate School does not have a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score requirement. If you are offered admission and accept our offer and have scored below a 27 on the Speaking sub-section of the TOEFL iBT or below an 8.0 on the Speaking sub-section of the IELTS you will be required to take an English placement test at the start of the fall term. Students who do not pass the test will be required to enroll in English Language Program classes.
Applications for admission to graduate study are accepted once a year and must specify the department of choice. Normally, a student accepted by Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is expected to have met requirements for a bachelor's degree in engineering or science. It is not necessary that the degree be in aeronautical or mechanical engineering. Qualified and interested students with degrees in mathematics, materials, physics, chemical, civil, or electrical engineering are also encouraged to apply.

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department's graduate programs are not step programs, therefore students are not required to receive an internal or external M.S.E. prior to obtaining a Ph.D. from the department. Applicants interested in pursuing a Ph.D. but who feel that an additional year of training would be beneficial before starting the regular Ph.D. program should indicate an interest in the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Initiative on the application.
