Aerospace engineers create innovative technologies for aviation, space exploration, and defense applications. They focus on designing, building, testing, and maintaining commercial and military aircraft, spacecraft components, satellites, and missile systems. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides both MS and PhD programs in aerospace engineering. Known as Utah's 'Space University,' USU ranks second nationally (2010) for space research funding based on National Science Foundation data. This financial support, combined with outstanding faculty, has earned USU's aerospace program widespread acclaim. USU's rocket team, comprising graduate and undergraduate students, has won NASA's University Student Launch Initiative top honors for three consecutive years. Additionally, USU's Space Dynamics Lab holds the global record for launching the highest number of student experiments into space.
