Since its establishment in 1927 as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures, the Department of Near Eastern Studies (NES) has pioneered Middle Eastern scholarship. While historically focused on medieval and pre-modern research covering Arab regions, Iran, Israel, and Turkey, the department has increasingly emphasized comprehensive studies of the contemporary Muslim world, extending to the Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia. This expansion acknowledges the interconnected nature of Muslim societies, allowing NES to provide students with interdisciplinary programs that transcend conventional geographical boundaries. For those pursuing academic or professional careers, NES offers a Ph.D. program with adaptable study plans and dissertation options. Additionally, the department provides a two-year Master of Arts program supervised by an interdepartmental committee. The Program Director assists students with course selection, thesis development, and examinations. This specialized M.A. track enables select students to engage in multidisciplinary studies under program leadership, culminating in a Master of Arts in Near Eastern Studies.
