The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs provides a Ph.D. program in Public Affairs specializing in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy (STEP).
The STEP program concentrates on applying both natural and social science approaches to policy challenges. It highlights the interplay between these disciplines in policy evaluation. The curriculum equips professionals with insights into scientific and technological complexities, specialized analytical techniques, and the evolution of science and technology implementation. Each STEP Ph.D. candidate designs their academic path in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Eleven cross-disciplinary professors from science and engineering departments form the STEP faculty, bringing knowledge in areas like atmospheric science and climate policy, ecological conservation strategies, biotech governance, digital policy frameworks, and nuclear technology controls.
