AeroAstro provides Ph.D. and Sc.D. programs that focus on specialized research within a concentrated field. The doctoral admission procedure follows the requirements outlined earlier in the Admission Requirements section. Students earn their degree by completing a tailored curriculum, presenting and defending a thesis proposal, and producing an original research thesis.
Upon acceptance into the program, doctoral candidates work with their advisor to choose a research focus and assemble a thesis committee. This committee guides the candidate's academic and research path while tracking their advancement. The key requirement for earning the doctorate is proving the ability to conduct pioneering research in aerospace engineering. The thesis demonstrates this capability and, once finished, is presented orally to department faculty for evaluation before degree conferral.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum score for TOEFL is 100 (iBT) 600 (PBT).
