The Chemistry Department offers resources for students pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. As a dynamic and growing center of scientific exploration, it combines rich historical foundations with forward-thinking innovation. Located in the state-of-the-art Frick Chemistry Laboratory, faculty and students engage in cutting-edge research where chemistry intersects with other disciplines. Their collaborative, interdisciplinary work spans from discovering novel molecules and energy solutions to developing groundbreaking catalytic models and advanced materials. At the same time, they uphold chemistry's fundamental mission—analyzing molecular structures and studying their behaviors and interactions. Graduate students are supported in designing tailored academic paths, benefiting from close faculty guidance and access to top-tier intellectual and technical resources. The Ph.D. is granted primarily based on a thesis presenting original research in a specialized chemistry field. Students initiate this work in their first year, intensify their focus during the second year, and eventually dedicate nearly all their efforts to it. The culminating public oral exam involves defending both an original research proposal and the completed dissertation. These requirements aim to foster insightful discussions rooted in independent investigation while encouraging candidates to synthesize knowledge across diverse fields aligned with their academic passions.
