Classics is a multidisciplinary exploration of Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, their interactions with other ancient societies, and their enduring influence in contemporary times. Scholars in this field examine languages, literature, historical records, artifacts, archaeological findings, philosophical thought, and beyond, with research spanning from ancient Mesopotamia to modern America. The discipline encompasses diverse perspectives on Greece and Rome within their Mediterranean context, investigating how classical writings, artifacts, historical narratives, concepts, and principles have impacted societies worldwide. Classics remains relevant today as modern civilization has been deeply influenced by its classical heritage. By comprehensively understanding this past, we gain insights into our current world and envision solutions for future challenges. As an interdisciplinary pursuit, Classics cultivates essential skills in students: cultural awareness, analytical reading, historical comprehension, and tracing historical influences. Examining antiquity provides valuable perspectives on modern life. The Department provides two academic paths: the Classical Studies program offers broad exploration of Mediterranean history, literature, and culture, including classical antiquity's later influences, while the Ancient History program focuses on Greek and Roman history and their connections with neighboring regions in the Near East, Europe, and Africa.

If English is not your native language and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) or the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). You are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic if English is your native language or if you have spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction.
