The Master of International Affairs (M.I.A.) program provides a flexible, interdisciplinary degree focused on practical learning and career growth. This 42-credit, two-year Master of International Affairs (M.I.A.) program is based at Penn State's University Park campus. The initial year focuses on core coursework, establishing a strong foundation in the structures, traditions, and systems of global engagement.
These foundational classes include focused training in essential analytical methods for complex problem-solving, introduction to key theories of sociocultural interaction, and development of professional competencies for international careers.
To complete the 42-credit requirement, students supplement core courses with electives. During their final two semesters, students focus on specialized courses within their concentration area and complete their chosen capstone project.
For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold a degree from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates. Degree must be a: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or Tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
