A joint degree program (JDP) allows students to pursue two graduate degrees simultaneously through a structured combination of programs. These collaborative initiatives are created by academic departments with approval from the deans of involved schools. Each approved JDP establishes shared guidelines covering admissions, academic advising, curriculum requirements, and tuition policies. A key benefit is the ability to apply certain course credits toward both degrees' residency requirements, decreasing the total units needed. However, Ph.D. candidates in joint programs cannot apply a Stanford master's degree or transferred credits toward their doctoral residency. Applicants must meet individual program deadlines and gain JDP admission before the study list deadline of their penultimate term. Both degrees are typically awarded together upon completion, except for J.D. programs where the law degree may be granted separately first.
