The department conducts research and instruction spanning diverse fields related to feminist and queer theory, gender studies, and sexuality, encompassing regions and languages worldwide. Through our close collaboration with Women's Studies, including our joint PhD program, we bring together scholars examining these subjects through multiple interdisciplinary lenses. Faculty research explores themes like racial and sexual identity formation in South Africa, the role of sensuality in spiritual practices, connections between gender violence and HIV/AIDS in marginalized communities, and the cultural evolution of kissing traditions in Japan. Both our graduate courses and research initiatives consistently integrate feminist and queer theoretical works originating not just from Western nations but also from Russia, China, Japan, South Africa, Egypt, Argentina, and beyond. This reflects our dedication to examining feminism and gender through a comprehensive historical framework that incorporates global perspectives. Graduate students have opportunities to teach courses such as CMLIT 101 (Race, Gender, and Identity in World Literature) and, for advanced students, CMLIT 406 (Women and World Literature).
