The 5-year Ph.D. program that includes an M.S. degree is designed for applicants who haven't earned a master's elsewhere. Applicants without existing master's credentials can select either this combined Ph.D. track or a standalone M.S. program during the application process. Participants in the five-year Ph.D. track retain the flexibility to transition to the M.S.-only option whenever desired. Those who initially enroll in the Geography department's master's program may later request transfer into the accelerated Ph.D. pathway. Candidates wishing to advance from the M.S. to Ph.D. must complete an intent-to-proceed application, accompanied by three faculty recommendation letters, due by October of their second academic year. The department evaluates these submissions by early November to determine Ph.D. program eligibility.

Emphasis should be placed on describing the potential research projects you would like to initiate at Penn State. There is no particular best format for a personal statement, but we like this writing guide from our colleagues in Wisconsin for ways to shape your writing.
