The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in German Linguistics and Applied Linguistics equips students to methodically analyze the structure of the German language, its acquisition process, its diverse usage across speech communities and individuals, and its pedagogical approaches. Beyond core linguistic studies, faculty provide instruction in second language learning, psycholinguistics, language contact phenomena, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and Pennsylvania German studies. While completing German-focused coursework, students also enroll in complementary classes from departments such as Spanish, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Psychology, and Communication Sciences and Disorders. Participants may pursue Penn State's dual-title Ph.D. in Language Science or seek admission to the LINDIV initiative, a specialized training program examining linguistic diversity within human-technology interfaces. Numerous students engage in joint research projects and community initiatives with peers and faculty across disciplines through the Center for Language Science.
