The Japanese Linguistics Ph.D. track equips students for doctoral-level studies in Japanese language research. Candidates should review the current degree requirements in both the Stanford Bulletin and EALC Graduate Handbook. Quarterly meetings with faculty advisors are mandatory to track progress through the program. Admission requires at least three years of Japanese language coursework at Stanford or equivalent proficiency. Doctoral candidates fulfill master's degree requirements en route to Ph.D. candidacy, with most coursework requiring Japanese-language research capabilities. Students holding a relevant master's degree from another institution may receive advanced standing if their previous work matches departmental Ph.D. standards. All coursework must be completed for letter grades. Before reaching TGR status, students must finish all degree requirements except the dissertation defense and final submission.
